Globally data centres utilise enough electricity to power millions of homes. With this in mind many people are turning to green hosting to demonstrate their part in living a greener lifestyle. Back when A Green Life began they were significantly more expensive – but with the market opening they are becoming far more economically viable and of course, more achievable for those of us on a smaller budget.
Personally I love Hostgator – although they are not the greenest host by far they suit me. They manage to offer low cost reseller hosting (which I need owing to the fact I host sites of my own, friends and design clients – over 30 so far) with a greenish edge (130% wind powered!). If you are interested to hear my thoughts on them – check here.
For more suggestions on Green Hosting check Green Web Hosts.
This weeks featured producer is one we have real personal experience of, they supplied our fruit and vegetables by their superb box scheme when we resided in the area a few years ago. Based at St Helens Farm in Tadcaster, The Organic Pantry have developed a fine reputation for quality of their organic produce. They deliver regular boxes to
Leeds, Bradford, York, Sheffield, Peak District amongst others.
Every week they stoffer a comprehensive delivery service straight to your door. They grow over 50 different varieties of vegetables themselves on the farm and always use seasonal produce in their organic veg boxes when possible. One of the most wonderful things about the box schemes was the sheer variety of vegetables on often – and quite often items were included that are no longer available in supermarkets. I have some really wonderful times experimenting with the ingredients they provided.
If you are within the area you might also like to call in at their farm shop – one of the most beautiful traditional style stores I have visited in a long time. It is a regular treature trove of organic produce – dairy, meats, whatever your pleasure it on their shelves – and very reasonably priced too. It really is a joy, one sheldom experienced in the cold hard factory style stores so common today.
The Organic Pantry is located at St Helens Farm, Newton Kyme, Tadcaster in North Yorkshire.
Our friends in Wimbledon, London recommended this weeks featured producer of the week – for their astounding service and range of organic produce.
They are made special purely and simply because they do their best to source British produce – and never air freight. Beautiful quality organic produce is delivered to your door and they even run a fruit & veg box scheme – which our friends advice us is absolutely superb.
There prices are competitive too – with a weeks worth of fruit and veg starting at £10.95 for one person – right through to a large family box for just £22.95.

I have very fond memories of my brief respite living with the Findhorn Community. Most of these originate from my time exploring the alcoves of this wonderful little store.
Within its confines you can find the best of organic foods from local producers and from further shores. Local organic cheeses, breads (my favourite will always be their home baked spelt bread) and organic whiskeys!
Located at the entrance to the famous Findhorn eco-village, the Phoenix has been serving the local and visiting community for over 20 years. Beginning life as a specialist new age shop the Phoenix has evolved over the years into a thriving community owned business. An award winning Food store, full service Apothecary and Bookstore, crafts, gifts and music jostle together on shelves packed from floor to ceiling.
I consider myself blessed to have spent sometime living there. It introduced me to new concepts of living green, introduced me to some new exotic fruits and vegetables, and gave me some memories I will always treasure. Check out their website, online store and, if you are ever in the area of Forres / Findhorn, be sure to call in!

We are introducing a new section to our blog, highlighting those companies that go that extra mile in providing either eco friendly, green or organic products. Our blog has always aimed to assist others to live that little bit greener without the hassle.
The first of these producers is none other than Devon Rose, a family owned organic meat producer.
The Dean Family has long been synonymous with the provision of fine meats throughout the West Country. We have been farming, gamekeeping, butchering and catering since the 1800′s. Each item has been carefully created with the attention only years of experience can bring. In fact we are so proud of our foods we challenge you to find better. After all we specifically avoid those processes and additives which, whilst highly profitable for the producer, can be detrimental to fresh quality. (Devon Rose)
With strong emphasis placed on welfare and eco friendly production they are one of the best alternatives for those green enthusiasts who wish to continue to eat meat products. All products come from animals which have been naturally reared. They have a firm no policy to antibiotics and additives, a very firm yes to natural growth, free range living and feed.
I have been a customer two or three times in the past, and they have always provided superb products at an affordable price. I recommend them highly. I especially recommend their Christmas Hampers.
To check out their full range of products please visit their website.

Unlike TreeHugger I have never even contemplated apologising for the graphic imagery below. If you eat meat you have a duty to yourself to find out where it came from and, more importantly, how it was reared and produced.
When I wrote about Trace Ramsey of Cricket Bread‘s photo essay of a hog butchery workshop in New York, opinions were divided between those who saw it as an important step in understanding your food, through to those who viewed it as little different to any other kind of animal exploitation. But the discussion was an important one, so we thought we’d share some more of Trace’s photos of the weekend event. (Via TreeHugger)

Its easy when all your meat comes in conveniently pre-packaged containers. “Its not from an animal after all, its from Asda!”
How many kids don´t actually know where pork or chicken comes from? How many of you prefer not to think about it? Its convenient not to. But you are not doing yourselves any favours by remaining in ignorance.
An excellent point came from my twitter feed the other day “just because something may be natural does not make it right”. Whilst we do not condone those who continue to eat meat (not all our contributors are vegetarian or vegan – we are in fact a very mixed bunch). This is a matter of personal choice. However we would always advise our readers to investigate the source of their meat. Try and keep to buying ethically reared or organic meat. Whilst we appreciate that not everyone is in a situation where they can afford to be so choosy – but you can eat less and supplement with pulses, vegetables and other wholesome products. Not only will it be better for the environment, but it will be a whole lot better for you!
Remember we owe it to ourselves and our children to know all the facts – today.
A Green Life would like to wish all its visitors a very Merry Christmas & a Happy Holidays. We´re atheist here at A Green Life but we also like to honour the beliefs of others.
Always remember even at this festive time being as green as you can be is still important. You don´t have to be a martyr to save the planet.
Above all, have a great holidays!
